I think the MM is fine as a core rulebook and should be included as part of the set.

The game has changed drastically since 1st edition. Ready-to-play monsters are the way to go so you can concentrate on playing more than preparing to play. I've put hundreds of 3.5 encounters together and each one was a giant pain in the butt. The other day I put 20 4e encounters together in an hour! This kind of thing makes it easier for the DM to concentrate more on the story than preparing the mechanics for combat. The MM streamlines the game a lot more and that equates to more fun for everyone.

And the option to build your own monsters is still there. The fact that the how-to is in the first few pages of the book should signify its importance to the current edition (it was in the back of the 3.5 MM). WotC has added more streamlined content without taking away from anything.

As to the cost, that's another issue. The last set of books cost $29.95 each in 2003. Believe it or not, if you adjust that amount for inflation, that's almost exactly $34.95 in 2008 dollars. Technically, the books are the same price.

Im not sure if you saw a picture of her, but in her interview when she got back to the UK last week she looked like the last possible person on the planet who would do anything to offend.
And, it was the kids in her class who named the bear... not her. She merely allowed democracy to occur in the classroom. I didn't hear of anyone wanting to lash the 7 year old kids who actually named the teddy.
